LONDON: VÄRTTINÄ With Eliza Carthy’s Generations
Contemporary Finnish folk music Värttinä with Eliza Carthy’s Generations.
Värttinä’s roots are in Finland’s Karelia region, featuring women’s vocal traditions and ancient runo poems.
The trio writes much of its own material, based on traditional styles, but with innovative modern arrangements. They bring the UK premiere of their new album Viena, inspired by the remote territory of Viena Karelia (on the Russian side) and its runo singers. Powerful songs about legend, landscape and ancestral lore.
Venue: Sage Two at Sage Gateshead, St Mary's Square, Gateshead Quays, Gateshead NE8 2JR
