The London Bulgarian Choir joins voices with visiting Finnish vocal ensemble Slavonic Tractor for a heartfelt celebration of Midsummer. A feast of song and summer magic!

The award-winning London Bulgarian Choir, led by Dessislava Stefanova, performs a spine-tingling repertoire of folk songs in traditional and contemporary arrangements. Some tell powerful tales of love and loss, fighting and celebration, while others are inspired by the daily fabric of life. Sung in a complex and unique vocal style, featuring dissonant harmonies, compelling rhythms and exuberant trills and hiccups, the choir’s heartfelt performances transcend language barriers and can move audiences to tears.

The choir was founded in 2000 and, thanks to Dessislava’s patience and dedication, has become a performing tour de force, winning hearts and minds from the Welsh valleys to Bulgaria’s mountain villages. They've also done a number of high-profile collaborations. The choir has grown into an extended ensemble bringing its thrilling sounds and infectious energy to various stages.

Slavonic Tractor, on the ohter hand, is a folk music influenced choir from Turku, Finland. Formed in 2004, the group sings Finnish traditional music and Bulgarian music. The group has participated in several international choir competitions, winning first prize in Coleraine, Northern Ireland in 2006 and Pärnu, Estonia in 2008. The group was awarded three gold stamps at Tampere Vocal Music Festival in Tampere, Finland in 2007.

The venue for this concert is a lovely church immediately opposite the entrance to Sands Films. The church dates from 1716 and has a homely grandeur with deep roots in the maritime history of Britain.
